A recent study has confirmed that the search engine Google is changing your brain and altering the way it works, seriously. But then again, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise since any new technology is going to change the way that our neurons fire and brain works. Anyways, a group of people got money for a study called “The Google Effect” led by Betsy Sparrow at Columbia University. Findings from the study led by Betsy were published in the popular journal, “Science.”
Contrary to popular myth that using the internet is making people dumber, that wasn’t what the researchers found. What they found was the fact that using the Google search engine causes the brain to reorganize its memories for information. Instead of relying on what is called “Rote memory,” people are using new technology such as their computers and Google to get the job done. In other words, instead of people using their brains directly to pull up information are basically saying, “I can just quick go Google it instead of try to test my memory.”
The findings shouldn’t really come as a surprise because people’s brains change as they have new experiences. If you blindfold yourself for a few days and cannot rely on vision, your brain will naturally rewire itself so that your sense of sound becomes more enhanced; this is a proven phenomenon. Similarly if you lost your hearing for a few days, you would begin to have increased visual skills.
Anyways, it makes total sense that since new technology is always being introduced that our brains evolve as we learn how to use it. These days it makes way more sense to just Google something rather than sit for an hour and try to dig a memory out of our subconscious. With such easy access to Google (via phones, computers, iPads, etc.) when people don’t know the answer to something or need to look up information, they just Google it. The study basically says that we are outsourcing our rote memory search to Google and taking the job away from our brain.
Sparrow was quoted as saying, “We’re not thoughtless empty-headed people who don’t have memories anymore.” She continued stating, “But we are becoming particularly adept at remembering where to go find things. And that’s kind of amazing.” What else is crazy is that Sparrow et al. at Columbia found that people are more likely to remember trivial facts if they think it will get erased from their computer, but will forget it if they are sure that it will be there. I’m sure I would fall victim to this as well because I rely on my computer for a lot of information. Knowing what Sparrow has done though and found through her study makes a lot of sense to me.
The team of researchers noted that losing your internet connection will feel like losing a friend. It doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone, but people that use their computers and the internet a lot have become dependent on the technology. Seriously try going 30 days without the internet or computer and I bet that you’ll have a tough time. A lot of people spend more time on the internet than they do interacting with real people. Maybe that’s why people are more prone to developing things like Schizoid Personality Disorder. Basically what we have created is a dependency to instant access to information; we rely on Google to give us information that we cannot remember.
Basically it’s tough to get away from Google once we become so accustomed to using it. The scientific paper for this study states, “We must remain plugged in to what Google knows.” Now those are pretty strong words saying “we must remain plugged in.” There’s where I disagree. I think that we can remain plugged into what Google knows and it would be smart to do so because it’s convenient, quicker, and easier. However, I think that “must” shouldn’t have been used in that sentence because someone could shut themselves off from technology and their brain would likely rewire itself and the person would be able to adapt.
What may confuse some people is that our reliance on Google for information isn’t a bad thing at all. Some people may initially get confused when they read this article and stop using the internet altogether; that wouldn’t be smart. Humans throughout history have been relying on other information reservoirs (e.g. other people) to help them out for years. Basically what Sparrow says is that before Google, humans were just asking other people that they knew to help recall information through what are referred to as “group memories” or memories that are passed on from human to human in groups. So if you forgot something about a certain place or event, you would just ask a person (family member, friend, etc.) with knowledge in that area. The nice thing about using Google is that you can quickly get awesome information without having to even pick up the phone and call someone that you know.
Nicolas Carr is a guy that wrote an article back in 2008 which shocked some people saying that digital devices and technology may be making us less intelligent. I will say that I think we’ve gotten mentally lazier because we can outsource so many tasks to other technological outlets. With that said, I think it makes sense to just use technology for what you can because it’s quicker. For example, instead of trying to multiply 10382732 x 28723792 in your head on a homework problem, it would make a lot more sense to just use a calculator or search engine. In other words, people are using technology when it makes sense to do so and could save them time and stress.
It seems as though using Google actually may be freeing up parts of our brain to use for other, more creative pursuits. Most people in the field of psychology know that it is easier to learn and understand complex concepts when the brain doesn’t have to worry about remembering information. So Google may be helping people out in the fact that it frees up some mental RAM and increases their processing speed of other information. Roddy Roediger (a Washington University psychologist) was quoted as saying “Why remember something if I know I can look it up again? In some sense, with Google and other search engines, we can offload some of our memory demands onto machines.”
For me, this study really isn’t as groundbreaking as the media hyped it up to be, but I think other people may think that it’s pretty cool to learn about. I think it’s good that there are passionate psychologists out there interested in learning about memory and its relationship to technology, but studies like this to me are temporary news hype. Your brain will continue to evolve over time in response to the environmental stimuli that it is presented with. So finding out that Google has changed the way people remember things makes so much intuitive sense that I don’t even think we needed a study like this to let us know.

Look for these things: counselors with current certifications; debt counseling service with current accreditation; on Guidestar’s list of nonprofits (if applicable), current member of the local Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
Dementia, or degenerative brain disease, affects millions of people. While the symptoms and their progression can vary widely from one patient to another, the disease follows a general path. Although some people think that the stages of alzheimer’s dementia (each of these diseases) are the exact same, they are different. They are similar in some ways, but try not to get them confused if you can help it. Dementia progress is divided into three major stages: early, moderate or mid-stage, and severe. These can be divided even further for a total of seven dementia stages. Below the early, mid-state, and later (or severe) stages of dementia are outlined and described.
Early dementia starts with a stage of entirely normal functioning. Neither the patients nor those around them notice any impairment. The disease then progresses to very mild impairment that may be attributed to normal forgetfulness. Patients may lose their keys or forget names and dates from time to time.
The final early stage is mild impairment. It is in this stage that the patient and others begin to notice a problem. In this stage, everyday forgetfulness becomes more common and noticeable mood changes such as anger or depression may arise.
The first stage of mid-stage dementia is moderate decline. At this point, patients have more trouble with short-term memory and mental tasks such as arithmetic or planning events. They may also act inappropriately, either socially isolating or acting out.
The final stage is moderately severe decline, where patients begin to lose abilities such as performing simple arithmetic, tracking days, or even recalling their own address. They are still able to recognize family and perform many tasks but may struggle with everyday things such as remembering to eat or maintain good hygiene.
The most demanding stages for caregivers are the final two under severe dementia. In the first stage, severe decline, patients experience worsening mental symptoms, such as the inability to recall basic information or dress or use the bathroom by themselves. They require constant care because their sleep cycles no longer follow a normal pattern and they will tend to wander off. Personality changes become much more marked during this time as well, with patients exhibiting symptoms of paranoia or delusion.
Finally, patients, enter a stage of very severe decline. At this point, they are no longer able to recognize familiar people or objects. They also cannot communicate. Instead, they make noises or speak short phrases that are often out of context. Simply put, patients are no longer responsive; in cases of frontal lobe dementia, this may be more noticeable early on. Physically, they need complete care because they can no longer feed themselves, are incontinent, cannot walk, sit up, or use muscles for most basic physical activities. Obviously vascular dementia stages may be slightly different from lewy body dementia stages and each person will be affected differently at different stages. Talk to a medical professional for more information and to ask any questions that you may have.
Marriage trouble is always a painful experience, but it can be even worse for Christian couples. Messages from the church often say that a good Christian won’t experience marriage difficulties or that any minor trouble that does appear can be easily solved with prayer. She should encourage the husband and wife to recognize the importance of the vows they took before God and commit to working on their marriage for a length of time.
If a couple has done that, though, and still can’t work together, no counselor should use the name of Christ to try to force or guilt a couple into staying together. If a couple wants to find a Christian marriage counselor to work with, they may ask their pastor for recommendations. Most pastors are used to receiving such calls and will have a name to suggest. If a couple is too embarrassed to ask their own pastor, since that means admitting they’re having trouble, they should call another church in the area to ask for a recommendation.
In some cases, a pastor may suggest himself as a free Christian marriage counseling service. Unless he has a counseling degree, this is usually probably a pretty bad idea. A pastor may have a thorough knowledge of the Bible, and he may have taken a counseling class, but he probably won’t know specific methods to help a struggling couple repair their marriage. It is always better to see a licensed professional even for pre marriage Christian counseling.
This sort of counseling may only make a couple feel more hopeless as they think they‘re working on their marriage but not getting anywhere. A couple should not settle for a Christian marriage counselor without a counseling degree and a license. You may even be able to find an online Christian marriage counseling service if you don’t want to meet in person with a counselor. Most people prefer counseling in person, but getting support with your marriage any way that you can is better than nothing at all.
Frontal lobe dementia is the direct result of brain damage to the frontal lobe of the brain in which dementia is the result. Picks disease is generally included in the diagnosis of frontal lobe dementia and people with them usually display very similar symptoms. People that experience developmental changes in personality, social behaviors, character changes, and impaired use of language due to damage or degeneration of the frontal and/or the temporal lobe(s) of the brain usually are diagnosed with Pick’s disease. It is very unfortunate to know someone with this diagnosis because currently, there is not a very good prognosis. Frontal lobe dementia is devastating because it changes the entire life of the person that has it.
Most frontal lobe dementias are accompanied by impaired cognition as well as psychological symptoms. Usually, psychological symptoms are found early on and they include (but are not limited to): impairments in social functioning, odd/erratic behavior, and signs of apathy. The symptoms of “Frontotemporal Dementia” are categorized by the description of Pick’s disease. People with this type of dementia may end up: being less active, losing interest in previously enjoyable activities, making inappropriate remarks in a conversation, and they may display symptoms of poor judgment.
Additionally, people with frontal lobe dementia may: not care about their personal appearance, they may act in an irresponsible manner, they may be very irritable (and experience other emotional problems like depression), and their ability to empathize with others (e.g. pick up on others’ emotions may be significantly reduced). Obviously not everyone that has this particular type of dementia is going to act the same or have the same symptoms of frontal lobe dementia; everyone is unique and therefore is going to be slightly different. Many of the symptoms can mimic psychological disorders, so it is important to distinguish frontal lobe dementia from a psychiatric disorder like schizophrenia.
Frontal lobe dementia is extremely similar to vascular dementia – and really only brain imaging like fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) can distinguish between the two. This disease typically has an onset between the ages of 40 and 65. Unfortunately, there aren’t any medications used for successful treatment for frontal lobe dementia. SSRI’s are commonly given out to patients with this disorder to help stabilize their mood and erratic behaviors. Hopefully there are some new breakthroughs from scientists soon to help people that are struggling with this disease because it is extremely devastating.

Who knows, if you search around online, you may even be able to find a free golf hypnosis recording somewhere. I’m not a golfer and wouldn’t know where to look for this type of hypnosis recording, but my guess is that even if you don’t find one that is free, you can get one for less than $20 from a website that sells these types of self hypnosis recordings. It could really help you make the positive change in your golf game that you need. People have used hypnotherapy for a variety of things such as: hypnosis to quit smoking, to reduce stress, and more. It is worth giving a shot to find out whether it can improve your own life.
