5 Simple Ways To Increase Your IQ Score

Posted by on 09 Apr 2013 | Tagged as: Boost Brain Power, Brain

When it comes to IQ score, most people believe that it is fixed – they believe that once IQ has been established, it cannot be improved upon. Although there are people that believe genetics are responsible for overall intelligence, researchers have found that environmental factors also play a role. If you want to increase your IQ, the best time to start is now. If you are a younger individual and the brain is not fully developed, you have more time to increase your overall intelligence as your brain develops. Even if you are an adult, you can still boost your brain power and improve your IQ score by trying a few of the tips below.

5 Simple Ways to Boost Your IQ:

1. Exercise

Most people know that getting adequate exercise is good for your brain. However, many do not know that it can actually increase your overall intelligence. There have been numerous different studies – especially in children – demonstrating a link between increased IQ and exercise. Those who do not exercise had a moderately lower IQ score than those who got plenty of aerobic activity. Other studies in young adults have demonstrated that more fit individuals tend to have higher IQ’s than individuals who are less fit.

2. Caffeine

Despite the fact that there are certain stimulants that are controversial, many will not cause any major negative effects on your body or brain. One example of a stimulant that can help you boost your IQ is caffeine. Caffeine increases overall brain activity, alertness, and mental functioning. As you already know, it increases your beta brain waves – brain waves associated with having a higher IQ, memory functioning, and logical thinking. As little as 100 mg of caffeine boosts mental performance and functioning and can help give you a little IQ boost.  If you do more research, there are many more supplements than just caffeine that can boost IQ.  They are outlined in GLOOM’s similar article 11 ways to increase IQ scores.

3. Brain training

Doing things to challenge your brain such as: interactive reading, engaging in intellectual debates, and taking practice IQ tests all will help you boost your current IQ. Obviously the best way to boost your IQ is to practice things that will be on the test. If you want to get good at it, take the test, see how certain areas of it work, and then train yourself to take it again. When you feel as though you are ready to give it another go, see how you do. Study the areas in which you performed weak so that you can put an extra emphasis on them for the next go round. You don’t get good at basketball by just attempting a shot every once in awhile. You need to take lots of shots before you eventually figure things out.

4. Diet

Diet plays a huge role in brain development and functioning. If you eat unhealthy foods, you aren’t going to damage your brain, but it certainly won’t be functioning optimally. In order to get the most out of your brain, it is important to give it the proper nutrients that it desires. Eating a lot of crappy, processed junk foods are associated with lower IQ’s than freshly prepared, organic foods. One specific finding is that the supplementation of Omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to increased IQ scores. Eating a balanced wholesome diet will give your brain what it needs for a boost in intelligence.

5. Education

Going to school and making yourself learn new things is a good way to challenge your brain and improve your intelligence. If you sat around all day and watched TV or played video games without going through any schooling, you would have less knowledge than if you had gone to school. Taking an IQ test would be a heck of a lot more difficult if you lack a good education.

The best way to maintain your smarts and boost your IQ score is by learning new things and challenging yourself. The reason society values a good education so much is because people who have put in the time and gone through the proper schooling for their masters degree or doctoral degree tend to have greater overall knowledge than those who didn’t. Learning takes time – but will challenge your brain and help you increase your knowledge base.

How Google & Technology is Changing Your Brain’s Rote Memory (The Google Effect Study)

Posted by on 23 Jul 2011 | Tagged as: Brain, Brain Studies, New Brain Information

A recent study has confirmed that the search engine Google is changing your brain and altering the way it works, seriously. But then again, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise since any new technology is going to change the way that our neurons fire and brain works. Anyways, a group of people got money for a study called “The Google Effect” led by Betsy Sparrow at Columbia University. Findings from the study led by Betsy were published in the popular journal, “Science.”

How is Google changing your brain? What did The Google Effect study find?

Contrary to popular myth that using the internet is making people dumber, that wasn’t what the researchers found. What they found was the fact that using the Google search engine causes the brain to reorganize its memories for information. Instead of relying on what is called “Rote memory,” people are using new technology such as their computers and Google to get the job done. In other words, instead of people using their brains directly to pull up information are basically saying, “I can just quick go Google it instead of try to test my memory.”

Are human brains evolving with technology?

The findings shouldn’t really come as a surprise because people’s brains change as they have new experiences. If you blindfold yourself for a few days and cannot rely on vision, your brain will naturally rewire itself so that your sense of sound becomes more enhanced; this is a proven phenomenon. Similarly if you lost your hearing for a few days, you would begin to have increased visual skills.

Anyways, it makes total sense that since new technology is always being introduced that our brains evolve as we learn how to use it. These days it makes way more sense to just Google something rather than sit for an hour and try to dig a memory out of our subconscious. With such easy access to Google (via phones, computers, iPads, etc.) when people don’t know the answer to something or need to look up information, they just Google it. The study basically says that we are outsourcing our rote memory search to Google and taking the job away from our brain.

We know where to go to find information: Google

Sparrow was quoted as saying, “We’re not thoughtless empty-headed people who don’t have memories anymore.” She continued stating, “But we are becoming particularly adept at remembering where to go find things. And that’s kind of amazing.” What else is crazy is that Sparrow et al. at Columbia found that people are more likely to remember trivial facts if they think it will get erased from their computer, but will forget it if they are sure that it will be there. I’m sure I would fall victim to this as well because I rely on my computer for a lot of information. Knowing what Sparrow has done though and found through her study makes a lot of sense to me.

Losing your internet connection feels like losing a friend?

The team of researchers noted that losing your internet connection will feel like losing a friend. It doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone, but people that use their computers and the internet a lot have become dependent on the technology. Seriously try going 30 days without the internet or computer and I bet that you’ll have a tough time. A lot of people spend more time on the internet than they do interacting with real people. Maybe that’s why people are more prone to developing things like Schizoid Personality Disorder. Basically what we have created is a dependency to instant access to information; we rely on Google to give us information that we cannot remember.

What are the implications for relying on Google for all of our information?

Basically it’s tough to get away from Google once we become so accustomed to using it. The scientific paper for this study states, “We must remain plugged in to what Google knows.” Now those are pretty strong words saying “we must remain plugged in.” There’s where I disagree. I think that we can remain plugged into what Google knows and it would be smart to do so because it’s convenient, quicker, and easier. However, I think that “must” shouldn’t have been used in that sentence because someone could shut themselves off from technology and their brain would likely rewire itself and the person would be able to adapt.

Is our reliance on Google to help with memory a bad thing?

What may confuse some people is that our reliance on Google for information isn’t a bad thing at all. Some people may initially get confused when they read this article and stop using the internet altogether; that wouldn’t be smart. Humans throughout history have been relying on other information reservoirs (e.g. other people) to help them out for years. Basically what Sparrow says is that before Google, humans were just asking other people that they knew to help recall information through what are referred to as “group memories” or memories that are passed on from human to human in groups. So if you forgot something about a certain place or event, you would just ask a person (family member, friend, etc.) with knowledge in that area. The nice thing about using Google is that you can quickly get awesome information without having to even pick up the phone and call someone that you know.

Nicolas Carr asks “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”

Nicolas Carr is a guy that wrote an article back in 2008 which shocked some people saying that digital devices and technology may be making us less intelligent. I will say that I think we’ve gotten mentally lazier because we can outsource so many tasks to other technological outlets. With that said, I think it makes sense to just use technology for what you can because it’s quicker. For example, instead of trying to multiply 10382732 x 28723792 in your head on a homework problem, it would make a lot more sense to just use a calculator or search engine. In other words, people are using technology when it makes sense to do so and could save them time and stress.

Final thoughts regarding The Google Effect study

It seems as though using Google actually may be freeing up parts of our brain to use for other, more creative pursuits. Most people in the field of psychology know that it is easier to learn and understand complex concepts when the brain doesn’t have to worry about remembering information. So Google may be helping people out in the fact that it frees up some mental RAM and increases their processing speed of other information. Roddy Roediger (a Washington University psychologist) was quoted as saying “Why remember something if I know I can look it up again? In some sense, with Google and other search engines, we can offload some of our memory demands onto machines.”

Why I don’t think the Google study is groundbreaking

For me, this study really isn’t as groundbreaking as the media hyped it up to be, but I think other people may think that it’s pretty cool to learn about. I think it’s good that there are passionate psychologists out there interested in learning about memory and its relationship to technology, but studies like this to me are temporary news hype. Your brain will continue to evolve over time in response to the environmental stimuli that it is presented with. So finding out that Google has changed the way people remember things makes so much intuitive sense that I don’t even think we needed a study like this to let us know.

Our brains will continue to change and adapt…

Although I found the study interesting, I don’t consider it groundbreaking by any means. It just shows that the brain can change and adapt depending on what technology you use or don’t use. I’ll leave the final words regarding this study for the lead researcher Betsy Sparrow: “We’re not thoughtless empty-headed people who don’t have memories anymore but we are becoming particularly adept at remembering where to go find things. And that’s kind of amazing.”

Free Dog Health Questions and Answers

Posted by on 30 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

It is very common for pet owners to have a lot of dog health questions because sometimes our pets act funny, do crazy things, or we think that they may have gotten sick. First of all, if you want to make sure that you get professional questions and an evaluation of your pet, it is important to visit a veterinarian. If you go to a vet, they will actually be able to see what is physically wrong with your pet and come up with some ideas that you can use for potential treatment. Below I included some free dog health questions that people often ask on the internet and do my best to answer them. However, if you have more complex questions and/or want a better answer, don’t hesitate to go to a professional.

Common dog health questions and answers

How can I tell whether my new puppy is a male or a female?

Although it is fairly obvious to tell whether a fully grown dog is a male or female, it is not so obvious when dogs are puppies. With that said, if you look, you will still be able to see that the male dogs have a penis and female dogs will have a urethra near their anus. If you have a male, it will be fairly obvious, although you will not see testicles immediately. This is basic biological features 101, but some people are confused. You can always look at pictures on the internet to effectively distinguish between male and female puppies so that you get everything right.

Should I give my dog Ibuprofen or other over-the-counter medicine?

You should never give your dog Ibuprofen or any other over-the-counter medicine! Medicine that is meant for humans is not usually meant for dogs. If your pet needs medicine, always go through a vet for recommendations – don’t assume that they will be able to handle human drugs. Most human medicines that are given to dogs result in highly toxic reactions with their system. Make sure that you avoid doing this because they will be extremely sick if you give them stuff from your own personal medicine cabinet.

Are all dogs colorblind or is that some sort of myth?

This is one of the most common dogs health questions around. The truth is that dogs are not colorblind. However, they do not have as many colors in their perceptual processes as humans do. Dogs happen to have less cone cells in the retinas of their eyes, which limits the colors that they can see. Additionally, they only see a couple of primary colors (blue and yellow to be specific) because they are dichromatic. They do not see the color “red” like humans do. In comparison to humans though, dogs can see much better at night than humans can because they have more highly-concentrated rod cells in their visual processes.

What happens if my dog has a wet nose?

This is another super common dog health question, but knowing whether your dog has a wet nose really isn’t very beneficial at all. Sometimes they lick their nose, sometimes it is hot and their noses dry up, and sometimes they have a runny nose. Having a “wet nose” is absolutely no indication of whether they are feeling healthy or are sick. With that said, some people have reported that when their dog licks its nose more often (to get it wet), that the dog is feeling worse. If you suspect your dog is sick, there will usually be more symptoms just than having a dry nose.

Have additional questions about dog health?

If you have more questions regarding the health of your pet, you should always ask a vet. It is not worth looking online for information about your dog when nobody online can actually see your dog. Most people that answer dog health questions on the internet just “speculate” about what could be wrong and give suggestions based on speculation. Always get your dog to a vet as soon as possible if your dog’s health seems poor.

Cat Health Questions and Answers

Posted by on 30 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Many people have cat health questions that need to be answered. Unfortunately, whenever you ask questions about pets on the internet, it is tough for people to come up with a clear-cut answer because they cannot physically see your pet. If you want to make sure that you are having all of your cats health questions answered professionally, then make sure that you seek out a veterinarian; they are experts when it comes to pet health. Most people have a lot of complicated questions regarding their pets, so it is not very smart to deal with people over the internet for these. If your question is fairly basic, then you may not need to go to the vet – but always go to the vet if you are in doubt or confused about something.

Cat health questions and answers

What can I do if my cat is sick with a cold?

If your cat has a cold, you should never treat them with human-based products as these may make your cat sicker. Some people have had success with canned fish food, vitamin C, as well as a substance called “Lysine.” Vitamin C is good for treating colds, but you should make sure that you purchase the pet-brand and not the type that is meant for humans. Other people have had success treating their cats by giving them fish oil. With that said, there is no need to try coming up with your own concoctions if it isn’t necessary. Many people confuse a “cold” with an infection. If your cat has an infection, you need to get them to the vet as soon as possible so that they can get the proper diagnosis and treatment.

How can I prevent my cat from using my flower bed as a liter box?

This is a very common health question, and fortunately, there are some great solutions. You can always go out and get some fencing to put around your flower bed so that your cat doesn’t mess it up; or you could completely relocate your flower-bed. Another option that you have is to clean your cat’s litter box better – most cats will use a litter box if it is clean and they have been trained properly. There are also sprays that you can use to keep cats and/or pets away from your flower bed – you can use these as a last resort if nothing else seems to work.

How can I help an injured cat?

The easiest and most effective way to help an injured cat is to take it to a veterinarian or call up a pet specialist to come directly to it. If the cat is too injured to be picked up or you don’t want to take a risk with it, call someone; don’t just let it sit and suffer. Most people want to play veterinarian, but they aren’t really equipped to treat wounds and infections right away. Make sure that you get the cat into a vet as soon as you possibly can.

Have more questions about cat health?

If you have more cat health questions that were not answered, you can always call your local veterinarian. If you give your vet a call, you will get more accurate information than you can find on the internet.

How Does Marriage Counseling Work?

Posted by on 30 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Many people want to know the answer to the question, “Does marriage counseling work?” The truth is that it works awesome for some people, while it doesn’t work as well for others. Most people that could benefit from marriage counseling have to be willing to actually put forth effort to making their marriage change for the better. If you show up to marriage counseling expecting your counselor to do all of the work, you are going to fail miserably and probably convince yourself that it won’t work. However, if you and your spouse are both open minded to the idea of going through with counseling, you may actually have a good experience and come to realize that marriage counseling can work.

Finding a good marriage counselor

The first thing that you will want to do if you are having marriage troubles is to contact a counselor in your area. Before you contact one to set up a meeting, it would be a good idea to read reviews of various counselors and talk to other people that have seen counselors to find out whether they have any recommendations. Finding a highly qualified counselor can make all the difference in the world in comparison to one that is just “average.” Make sure that you only work with one that is good.

Targeting your problems

After you find a marriage counseling clinic and counselor, you will likely have to fill out some paperwork and then tell the counselor about your problems. You will discuss what your goals are for therapy and then work to achieve them. Counseling takes time, so do not expect to have a perfect marriage after the first few sessions. However, within a few months, you should make significant improvements if you are open to trying new things.

How does marriage counseling work?

You basically express your concerns about your marriage to a counselor, and then receive suggestions as to how you can improve your relationship. Most quality counselors will come up with a lot of good ideas, but you have to have an open mind and actually put them to the test. If you aren’t open to trying anything new, you aren’t going to get any benefit from counseling.

Marriage counseling does it work

Does marriage counseling really work? The answer is that if you know what problems you want to try to overcome as a couple, it can be highly effective. Studies have shown that counseling for marriages is the most effective for couples that are: young, still in love, and are open minded to receive counseling. If you want to save your marriage and/or improve your relationship, counseling can be a phenomenal thing to pursue. However, if you sense that you could benefit from seeing a counselor, don’t be afraid to talk with your spouse about it and get a meeting scheduled as soon as possible.

Street Hypnosis Training Exposed: Decks and Igor Ledochowski

Posted by on 19 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Chances are that if you’ve been to Las Vegas, you’ve seen plenty of examples of street hypnosis being performed outside of casinos and resorts. Most people that don’t know how this type of hypnosis works are usually pretty impressed. A lot of people are a little bit skeptical about how it works, but most people genuinely believe that people off the street can be hypnotized by a professional. The truth though, is that you can see many examples of street hypnosis exposed by professional hypnotists. Street hypnosis is nothing more than a show put on for entertainment and even if you are hypnotized and do something crazy, it is because you wanted to do it anyways.

Street hypnosis training

In street hypnosis training, the hypnotists usually pick out people on the street that look like they aren’t afraid to play along and do something daring. All that the hypnotist will do is try to help the person get into a relaxed state. By relaxing them, the person will probably lower their inhibitions a little bit more than they usually would. When this happens, it is pretty easy for a hypnotist to put on a show for a crowd with just one person playing along as an accomplice. If you have done research on becoming a street hypnotist, you have probably considered buying what is called a “street hypnosis deck.”

Truth about street hypnosis

The truth is that this particular program isn’t really going to help you much. If your goal is to become an entertainer and street hypnotist, you are going to need to get one-on-one training with a professional in the game. Although it can be difficult to find someone to train you, that is clearly the best way to learn the trade. A lot of people though, don’t realize that street hypnosis isn’t magic and hypnosis isn’t some sort of mystical force that makes people confused and forget everything that they did. All that it does is make them more relaxed and willing to do something crazy.

Igor Ledochowski street hypnosis program

If you are interested in street hypnosis, then you may have heard of the Igor Ledochowski mater class program. The truth is that you really don’t need it to learn the trade. A lot of people have considered this entire program a scam. A lot of people in the hypnosis field flood it with lies and make people believe that certain techniques will work to manipulate people (e.g. get others to do anything), but that isn’t true. If hypnosis could be harnessed to control people on the street, these hypnotists would be super rich. All that street hypnosis does is entertain people – it isn’t magic, but can certainly be hilarious to watch.

Pediatric Brain Injury (Statistics and Treatment)

Posted by on 16 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: Brain, Brain Damage, Brain Development

According to pediatric brain injury statistics, it is estimated that well over three million children in the United States are affected with pediatric brain injury each year. Pediatric brain injuries can be caused by a wide-variety of things including: sports injuries, meningitis, viral infection, drug use, war injuries, assaults, vehicle accidents, AIDS infection, and substance abuse. For most people that have a baby that has a pediatric brain injury, the news can be absolutely devastating. What’s even more devastating is the fact that most of these children are not given adequate care over the long term.

Long Term Brain Deficits

People that experience a pediatric acquired brain injury generally have a fairly poor long term prognosis. There can be significant developmental gaps (e.g. learning, cognition, etc.) for individuals that experienced one of these injuries. It is really tough to deal with this as parents of a baby who has a pediatric brain injury, but it is something that you must do. It is best to learn about the condition and educate yourself if you just found out that your baby has a significant injury. Unfortunately, many people end up panicking and this really just runs them in circles and really ends up helping nobody.

Different Types of Injuries

A pediatric brain injury is much more than just a small bump on the head or a minor scrape. It is a serious blow to the head that can cause a bunch of damage. Things like Shaken Baby Syndrome, in which a baby is shaken violently, thrown, or slammed, can induce very severe pediatric brain injuries. When the baby’s skull hits something with a lot of force, it causes bleeding inside of the brain and a ton of pressure is applied throughout the entire skull. This pressure is what can cause permanent brain damage, which could lead to a ton of different impairments when the brain is developing.

Pediatric Brain Injury Treatment

It is best to make an attempt to treat pediatric brain injuries as soon as possible; seek immediate medical attention for your baby. Currently there is a lot of research being done in the area of brain injury for babies and children. Most babies need to recover in the right environment with an appropriate natural balance between their home and hospital. If at all possible, it would be a great idea to send your baby to a pediatric brain injury program; there are these specialized programs throughout the country. Before you sign your baby up for rehab services, it would be a very smart idea to make sure that you have read reviews of the facility and inspected it yourself to make sure that it is up to your standards. Although the prognosis is not the greatest for a pediatric brain injury, taking action to find treatment is significantly better than doing nothing.

Best Way To Lose Weight Fast

Posted by on 11 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

There are a lot of overweight people throughout the world these days. Everyone is out to find the best way to lose weight fast, yet everyone already knows the best method. The best fast way to lose weight is to eat healthy foods and exercise. Not only that, but you must avoid bad foods and bad substances like alcohol. Additionally, you must have mental willpower to change your bad habits and you must be disciplined over a long period of time to see results. Everyone is going for the quick fix these days and the “quick fix” will get you absolutely nowhere in the long run. In order to lose weight in a safe and healthy manner, you need to maintain a routine of healthy habits.

The best way to lose weight fast: follow these guidelines

1. Tweak your diet – If you eliminate everything that is unhealthy from your diet and replace all of those foods with healthier options, you will notice quick results. Throw away your cookies, chips, and white bread. Replace those with homegrown natural foods like spinach, cucumber, carrots, apples, pears, oranges, whole wheat bread, etc.

2. Exercise every day – Don’t make any exceptions; make it a habit to get out and exercise for at least 60 minutes per day. If you sit around, you aren’t going to burn calories and you are probably going to gain weight. If you want to slim down, schedule some personal time every day (yes EVERY DAY) to work out.

3. Mentally focus – If you don’t target the mental part of weight loss, you won’t get any results. You need to keep yourself focused on your goals. I recommend meditation for at least 20 minutes per day. Yes, it can take some time to learn how to meditate, but it will be worth it because it builds your self-discipline.

4. Let time pass – As time passes, you will realize that there really aren’t any best ways to lose weight fast (through fad diets and supplements). Even if you think that hoodia weight loss products are going to work, there’s no need for them if you are staying disciplined. Over time you will see results. Don’t think of losing weight as something that needs to be instant; if you do this, you will likely fail. Think for the long term and you are going to make significant progress.

What is the best way to lose weight fast?

The best way to lose weight fast is to use methods that actually works. If you see a new product on TV that sounds miraculous or like you are going to be able to lose weight easily – it is not going to work. The best fast way to lose weight is a result of hard work and self discipline. There are no quick and easy solutions and there never will be without a cost. You can lose weight, but you’ve got to work at it.

Menopause Insomnia Treatment

Posted by on 08 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Menopause insomnia is characterized as “the inability to sleep at night due to symptoms caused by menopause.” Although not all women experience menopausal insomnia, many cannot fall asleep due to hot flashes and overall anxiety accompanying menopause. Many women also experience major hormonal fluctuations in their bodies during menopause – and this could have something to do with it causing insomnia. So what can you do in order to overcome your insomnia during menopause? The recommended treatment is pretty much the exact same as it would be for people without menopause that want to learn how to cure insomnia.

Natural Menopause Insomnia Treatment Options

1. Relaxation techniques – If you are able to find a method of relaxation that works well for you, then you will be able to stay calm and clear out nervous tension associated with menopause. Relaxing is sure to provide some insomnia relief if you cannot currently sleep well.

2. Keep your room at a comfortable temperature – If the room that you sleep in is way too hot or too cold, you are going to definitely want to change your home’s temperature so that you are comfortable. Waking up because you are too hot or too cold at night is very common; and it leads to a poor night’s sleep.

3. Tire yourself out during the day – If you are not tired when you want to go to bed (because you didn’t get good enough exercise during the day), then you probably should start exercising more. Know your own limits and keep in mind that most people with insomnia aren’t nearly as active as they should be during the day. If you sit around and “hang out” for most of your waking hours, you aren’t burning calories, and you aren’t going to be tired when it comes time to fall asleep.

Menopause and Insomnia Are Connected

It is clear that menopause and insomnia are inherently connected, but not everyone with menopause experiences extreme insomnia. If you are still having trouble dealing with staying awake at night, you could try some home remedies for insomnia or a non addictive sleep aid. Even alternative therapies like acupuncture for insomnia may help you out. It is important to understand that what works for one person, may not work well for you. Trying different menopause insomnia treatments out is the only way that you will find out what works best in your individual case.  Insomnia is a very common condition, so realize that if you have it, you are not alone.  Look over sleep disorder statistics for more information on this particular disorder.

Christian Debt Counseling Services

Posted by on 08 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Financial healing is just as important as spiritual healing for Christians. Debt is rampant and Christians are not immune from the statistics. Christian debt counseling may be able to assist those with resolving financial debt.  If you are Christian, and need some help with your debt, you should consider working with professionals that will be able to help you get back on the right track.

Why Christian Counseling Debt Services?

One of the differences between secular and Christian debt counseling is the approach. Counselors do not judge clients but address financial debt from a biblical approach. God’s Word and principles are applied to heal more than a Christian’s credit score. The Christian debt counseling program is used as an opportunity to educate and promote permanent financial stability. The fees to set up a file (generally a set amount) and monthly maintenance (usually a percentage of the payment amount) are low cost.

What is a Debt Management Program?

Debt management programs (DMP) are set up by third- party organizations to assist individuals with getting out of debt. The words debt management program and debt consolidation plan are used interchangeably. A DMP is not a loan but a structured repayment plan. This is accomplished by consolidating personal unsecured debt; and negotiating on behalf of the client. Debt consolidation plans are tailored to fit each financial situation. Christian debt consolidation is structured like other DMPs but has a faith-based foundation. Unlike a secular DMP, part of the Christian debt consolidation plan’s foundation revolves around prayer and teaching Godly principles on managing money.

Where to Receive Christian Credit Debt Counseling

Clients have several options to obtain Christian consolidation counseling credit debt services. Information and services are available in-person, on line, and by telephone. Find a church that offers financial management classes or is able to assist in locating a Christian debt counseling service in your area.  Usually you will be able to find something if you check your local listings for people in need of Christian counseling debt services.

Family Life Credit Services (FLCS) was started in 1989 (Family Life Services was founded in 1986) and is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing Christian debt counseling. After thoroughly analyzing a client’s financial situation, possible options include: self payment (client pays creditors directly), debt consolidation plan, bankruptcy, and personal loans. Family Life Credit Services is a debt counseling service and does not make loans or file bankruptcy claims for clients. If necessary, FLCS can refer a client to a Christian debt counseling service in their area.

Helpful Christian Debt Counseling Service Tips

Before entrusting personal information or signing any paperwork with Christian debt counseling services, do a thorough initial investigation. For example, is the Christian debt counseling service a member of the American Association of Debt Management Organizations (AADMO)? Look for these things: counselors with current certifications; debt counseling service with current accreditation; on Guidestar’s list of nonprofits (if applicable), current member of the local Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Dementia Stages: Early, Middle, Severe

Posted by on 06 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: Brain, Mental Health

Dementia, or degenerative brain disease, affects millions of people. While the symptoms and their progression can vary widely from one patient to another, the disease follows a general path.  Although some people think that the stages of alzheimer’s dementia (each of these diseases) are the exact same, they are different.  They are similar in some ways, but try not to get them confused if you can help it. Dementia progress is divided into three major stages: early, moderate or mid-stage, and severe. These can be divided even further for a total of seven dementia stages. Below the early, mid-state, and later (or severe) stages of dementia are outlined and described.

Early Stage Dementia

Early dementia starts with a stage of entirely normal functioning. Neither the patients nor those around them notice any impairment. The disease then progresses to very mild impairment that may be attributed to normal forgetfulness. Patients may lose their keys or forget names and dates from time to time.

The final early stage is mild impairment. It is in this stage that the patient and others begin to notice a problem. In this stage, everyday forgetfulness becomes more common and noticeable mood changes such as anger or depression may arise.

Moderate or Mid-State Dementia

The first stage of mid-stage dementia is moderate decline. At this point, patients have more trouble with short-term memory and mental tasks such as arithmetic or planning events. They may also act inappropriately, either socially isolating or acting out.

The final stage is moderately severe decline, where patients begin to lose abilities such as performing simple arithmetic, tracking days, or even recalling their own address. They are still able to recognize family and perform many tasks but may struggle with everyday things such as remembering to eat or maintain good hygiene.

Severe Dementia

The most demanding stages for caregivers are the final two under severe dementia. In the first stage, severe decline, patients experience worsening mental symptoms, such as the inability to recall basic information or dress or use the bathroom by themselves. They require constant care because their sleep cycles no longer follow a normal pattern and they will tend to wander off. Personality changes become much more marked during this time as well, with patients exhibiting symptoms of paranoia or delusion.

Finally, patients, enter a stage of very severe decline. At this point, they are no longer able to recognize familiar people or objects. They also cannot communicate. Instead, they make noises or speak short phrases that are often out of context. Simply put, patients are no longer responsive; in cases of frontal lobe dementia, this may be more noticeable early on. Physically, they need complete care because they can no longer feed themselves, are incontinent, cannot walk, sit up, or use muscles for most basic physical activities.  Obviously vascular dementia stages may be slightly different from lewy body dementia stages and each person will be affected differently at different stages.  Talk to a medical professional for more information and to ask any questions that you may have.

Christian Marriage Counseling Services

Posted by on 05 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Marriage trouble is always a painful experience, but it can be even worse for Christian couples. Messages from the church often say that a good Christian won’t experience marriage difficulties or that any minor trouble that does appear can be easily solved with prayer. In reality, that’s not the case. Approximately 30 percent of Christian marriages fail, about the same rate as those marriages outside the church. Christian marriage counseling is a vital resource.

Christian Marriage Counseling vs. Secular Counseling

In practice, Christian marriage counseling is similar to secular counseling. The major difference is that in Christian counseling, participants look at their problems from a biblical point of view and consider the Bible to be an important tool in learning to work through their problems. In Christian marriage counseling, the counselor may pray with the couple and should encourage the husband and wife to pray with each other daily, as well as to stay or get connected to a church.

Christian marriage counseling (and even Christian Pre marriage counseling) begins with the premise that marriage is God-ordained and that saving the marriage is almost always the best goal. However, a wise Christian counselor recognizes that isn’t always possible. She should encourage the husband and wife to recognize the importance of the vows they took before God and commit to working on their marriage for a length of time.

Don’t Let Your Christian Counselor Make You Feel Guilty

If a couple has done that, though, and still can’t work together, no counselor should use the name of Christ to try to force or guilt a couple into staying together. If a couple wants to find a Christian marriage counselor to work with, they may ask their pastor for recommendations. Most pastors are used to receiving such calls and will have a name to suggest. If a couple is too embarrassed to ask their own pastor, since that means admitting they’re having trouble, they should call another church in the area to ask for a recommendation.

A Licensed Counselor is Probably Best

In some cases, a pastor may suggest himself as a free Christian marriage counseling service. Unless he has a counseling degree, this is usually probably a pretty bad idea. A pastor may have a thorough knowledge of the Bible, and he may have taken a counseling class, but he probably won’t know specific methods to help a struggling couple repair their marriage. It is always better to see a licensed professional even for pre marriage Christian counseling.

Are You Making Improvements in Your Marriage?

This sort of counseling may only make a couple feel more hopeless as they think they‘re working on their marriage but not getting anywhere. A couple should not settle for a Christian marriage counselor without a counseling degree and a license. You may even be able to find an online Christian marriage counseling service if you don’t want to meet in person with a counselor. Most people prefer counseling in person, but getting support with your marriage any way that you can is better than nothing at all.

Frontal Lobe Dementia: General Description

Posted by on 05 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: Brain, Brain Damage, Brain Development, Mental Health

Frontal lobe dementia is the direct result of brain damage to the frontal lobe of the brain in which dementia is the result. Picks disease is generally included in the diagnosis of frontal lobe dementia and people with them usually display very similar symptoms. People that experience developmental changes in personality, social behaviors, character changes, and impaired use of language due to damage or degeneration of the frontal and/or the temporal lobe(s) of the brain usually are diagnosed with Pick’s disease. It is very unfortunate to know someone with this diagnosis because currently, there is not a very good prognosis. Frontal lobe dementia is devastating because it changes the entire life of the person that has it.

Dementia Frontal Lobe General Description

Most frontal lobe dementias are accompanied by impaired cognition as well as psychological symptoms. Usually, psychological symptoms are found early on and they include (but are not limited to): impairments in social functioning, odd/erratic behavior, and signs of apathy. The symptoms of “Frontotemporal Dementia” are categorized by the description of Pick’s disease. People with this type of dementia may end up: being less active, losing interest in previously enjoyable activities, making inappropriate remarks in a conversation, and they may display symptoms of poor judgment.

Frontal Lobe Dementia Symptoms

Additionally, people with frontal lobe dementia may: not care about their personal appearance, they may act in an irresponsible manner, they may be very irritable (and experience other emotional problems like depression), and their ability to empathize with others (e.g. pick up on others’ emotions may be significantly reduced). Obviously not everyone that has this particular type of dementia is going to act the same or have the same symptoms of frontal lobe dementia; everyone is unique and therefore is going to be slightly different. Many of the symptoms can mimic psychological disorders, so it is important to distinguish frontal lobe dementia from a psychiatric disorder like schizophrenia.

Frontal Lobe Dementia Treatment

Frontal lobe dementia is extremely similar to vascular dementia – and really only brain imaging like fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) can distinguish between the two. This disease typically has an onset between the ages of 40 and 65. Unfortunately, there aren’t any medications used for successful treatment for frontal lobe dementia. SSRI’s are commonly given out to patients with this disorder to help stabilize their mood and erratic behaviors. Hopefully there are some new breakthroughs from scientists soon to help people that are struggling with this disease because it is extremely devastating.

Substance Abuse Counseling For Positive Changes

Posted by on 04 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Substance abuse is a problem that affects people of all walks of life. Business professionals, college students; even doctors can suffer from substance abuse problems. The fact is, those who find themselves abusing substances on a regular basis often also suffer from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, and substance abuse can sometimes be seen as a compulsive behavior. Fortunately, those who suffer from substance abuse issues do not have to live their lives in pain. Substance abuse counseling has helped many thousands of people throughout the world conquer their issues and go on to live fulfilling lives.

What to Know About Substance Abuse Counselors

Counselors who deal with people that have substance abuse issues are often no different than those that deal with depressed and anxious individuals, except for the fact that they have a specialty in this specific area. More often than not, substance abuse counselors will make use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT in their sessions, as it is an extremely effective form of therapy for those who suffer from substance abuse issues. CBT teaches that actions are, more often than not, the result of thoughts and emotions. By learning to control one’s emotions and live mindfully, one can eventually learn to overcome destructive actions such as substance abuse.

Considering Substance Abuse Counseling Services

Many people worry about going to a substance abuse counselor because they are afraid that the police will be involved, since some people abuse substances that are illegal. Substance abuse counseling is extremely and one-hundred percent confidential, ensuring that nothing that is said between either party ever leaves the boundaries of the room. While it may be difficult to learn to trust a substance abuse counselor at first, most people find that after three or four sessions, a bond of trust begins to form. It is when this happens that the therapy truly becomes effective.

First Meeting With A Substance Abuse Counselor

One should know that their first session with a substance abuse counselor will usually consist of an overview of the client and his or her current issues and habits. Without a thorough background on the individual, it can be very difficult for the counselor to work effectively. It should also be noted that therapy can take a long time before results begin to show, and can be rather expensive. The fact is, however, most people who stick with therapy find that it is instrumental to their ability to change, and often go on to lead sober, fulfilling lives.

Make Sure Your Counselor is Properly Licensed

It is important to make sure that you do research and find a good counselor ahead of time. Make sure that you check for substance abuse counseling certification in your counselor – make sure that they are properly licensed. Most counselors will have to go through substance abuse counseling training before they get issued a license. Good substance abuse counseling programs should help you make a much-needed positive change in your life.

Golf Hypnosis To Improve Your Golf Game

Posted by on 02 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: New Brain Information

Golf hypnosis is the use of hypnotherapy to improve one’s ability to golf. Most people that have done it claim that it does provide them with benefit. Even the famous Tiger Woods has used variations of hypnosis to help improve his golf game. It is not going to make you a miracle golfer overnight, but what it will do is help you relax and stay focused in crucial situations while you are on the golf course. Since golf requires a lot of mental concentration, it makes complete sense to try hypnosis for golf if you are an avid golfer. Hypnosis is not only used for golf though, it can be used for many other sports, or anything requiring a great deal of concentrated focus.

2 Types of Hypnosis for Golfers

1. Self Hypnosis – This is probably the least expensive method of hypnosis and can be done by yourself in a quite environment. All that you will need is to buy a golf hypnosis CD or some sort of golf hypnosis mp3 that you can play from your iPod or through some headphones. You will then just need to lie back, relax, and follow the instructions on your recording. Usually recordings will start by giving you advice about how you can relax more deeply. When you are in a relaxed state, the tape will give you suggestions that will help you focus on improving your mentality for golfing.

2. Professional Hypnotherapy – This is done by a professional hypnotherapist (e.g. they are licensed) and usually, they will charge a commission fee for people that are interested. This is not the same thing as stage hypnosis or conversational hypnosis (which is a complete scam). Hiring a hypnotherapist can be expensive and they will basically help you relax, and then give you suggestions that will (potentially) help you improve your golf game.

Trying Golf Hypnosis

Whether you decide to try golf self hypnosis to improve your game or hire a professional hypnotherapist, you could really improve your ability to focus on the course. Who knows, if you search around online, you may even be able to find a free golf hypnosis recording somewhere. I’m not a golfer and wouldn’t know where to look for this type of hypnosis recording, but my guess is that even if you don’t find one that is free, you can get one for less than $20 from a website that sells these types of self hypnosis recordings.  It could really help you make the positive change in your golf game that you need.  People have used hypnotherapy for a variety of things such as: hypnosis to quit smoking, to reduce stress, and more.  It is worth giving a shot to find out whether it can improve your own life.
