It is very common for pet owners to have a lot of dog health questions because sometimes our pets act funny, do crazy things, or we think that they may have gotten sick. First of all, if you want to make sure that you get professional questions and an evaluation of your pet, it is important to visit a veterinarian. If you go to a vet, they will actually be able to see what is physically wrong with your pet and come up with some ideas that you can use for potential treatment. How can I tell whether my new puppy is a male or a female?
Although it is fairly obvious to tell whether a fully grown dog is a male or female, it is not so obvious when dogs are puppies. With that said, if you look, you will still be able to see that the male dogs have a penis and female dogs will have a urethra near their anus. If you have a male, it will be fairly obvious, although you will not see testicles immediately. This is basic biological features 101, but some people are confused. You can always look at pictures on the internet to effectively distinguish between male and female puppies so that you get everything right.
Should I give my dog Ibuprofen or other over-the-counter medicine?
You should never give your dog Ibuprofen or any other over-the-counter medicine! Medicine that is meant for humans is not usually meant for dogs. If your pet needs medicine, always go through a vet for recommendations – don’t assume that they will be able to handle human drugs. Most human medicines that are given to dogs result in highly toxic reactions with their system. Make sure that you avoid doing this because they will be extremely sick if you give them stuff from your own personal medicine cabinet.
Are all dogs colorblind or is that some sort of myth?
This is one of the most common dogs health questions around. The truth is that dogs are not colorblind. However, they do not have as many colors in their perceptual processes as humans do. Dogs happen to have less cone cells in the retinas of their eyes, which limits the colors that they can see. Additionally, they only see a couple of primary colors (blue and yellow to be specific) because they are dichromatic. They do not see the color “red” like humans do. In comparison to humans though, dogs can see much better at night than humans can because they have more highly-concentrated rod cells in their visual processes.
What happens if my dog has a wet nose?
This is another super common dog health question, but knowing whether your dog has a wet nose really isn’t very beneficial at all. Sometimes they lick their nose, sometimes it is hot and their noses dry up, and sometimes they have a runny nose. Having a “wet nose” is absolutely no indication of whether they are feeling healthy or are sick. With that said, some people have reported that when their dog licks its nose more often (to get it wet), that the dog is feeling worse. If you suspect your dog is sick, there will usually be more symptoms just than having a dry nose.

If you have more questions regarding the health of your pet, you should always ask a vet. It is not worth looking online for information about your dog when nobody online can actually see your dog. Another option that you have is to clean your cat’s litter box better – most cats will use a litter box if it is clean and they have been trained properly. There are also sprays that you can use to keep cats and/or pets away from your flower bed – you can use these as a last resort if nothing else seems to work.
How can I help an injured cat?
The easiest and most effective way to help an injured cat is to take it to a veterinarian or call up a pet specialist to come directly to it. If the cat is too injured to be picked up or you don’t want to take a risk with it, call someone; don’t just let it sit and suffer. Most people want to play veterinarian, but they aren’t really equipped to treat wounds and infections right away. Make sure that you get the cat into a vet as soon as you possibly can.

A lot of people have taken up the act of running to lose weight because they want to slim down. Although running is great cardiovascular activity for people that are trying to achieve weight loss, by itself it is not going to do anything. If you are eating a lot of junk food and don’t change your diet, you aren’t going to lose any weight by running. There are a few common mistakes that people make when they are trying to lose weight by taking up running.
Common mistakes people make when they start running to lose weight
1. I should eat a ton more – If you think that you need to eat more food just because you went for a run, you are somewhat right, but if you eat a “ton” of carbs – you put yourself at risk for actually gaining more weight than you burned on your run.
2. Loading up on carbohydrates – Carbs are ideal for runners, aren’t they? If you burn a lot of carbs, you need to fuel your body with some, but not a lot. People that “load up on carbs” usually do not have very good results when it comes to weight loss because these carbs get stored in fat cells throughout the body if they are not used up.
3. They keep eating bad foods – No matter if you think you have figured out the best way to lose weight running strategy, you aren’t going to slim down if you make poor food choices. Eating cakes, candies, ice cream, etc. are going to make it very difficult to actually lose weight.
Alternatives to running are probably better
Although many people like to start running to lose weight, there are way better alternatives. I have ran in marathons myself and know what it feels like to go on long runs; it feels great. However, I know that I can stay just as fit by doing shorter more intense workouts than just going for a run. I personally workout for 1 hour every single day (except Sundays) and am super fit, but it was not because I took up running. I would run for 5 miles at a time and not notice any change in my body after doing this for weeks. I was even doing the best running to lose weight that I could by running as fast as possible, however, this isn’t as effective as alternatives.
Things like power swimming, plyometrics workouts, and cardio conditioning, work even better than running. Although you can obviously join a running to lose weight program and get results by eating a different diet, you don’t need to run to lose weight. All that you need to do is workout every single day and focus on eating a disciplined diet. If you don’t make dietary changes, you won’t lose weight – point blank, period.

The most common treatment for terminal insomnia is relaxation before bed. This can be done by avoiding things like Facebook, TV, cell phone texting, and the computer. There is a clear connection between alcohol and insomnia in certain individuals. Although when most people drink alcohol in moderation, it relaxes them and makes it easy to fall asleep, some people are affected differently. The emergence of a common condition called “alcohol insomnia” has become very popular and is usually found in people that drink beyond moderation over an extended period of time (e.g. alcoholics). The reason that alcohol is linked to insomnia is due to a number of different things including: the atmosphere in which you drink, the time of day/night you drink, and how much alcohol you have.
Does alcohol cause insomnia?
Although alcohol itself does not usually cause insomnia, it can lead to insomnia symptoms over the long term if abused. Most people stay up late drinking with friends, and they condition their bodies to being up (even though their biological clock is telling them that they should have been asleep hours ago). Pushing though feelings of tiredness (when you know that you should go to bed) is not healthy for your sleep cycle and can cause insomnia.
Since alcohol depletes your brain of serotonin over time, and blocks alpha brain waves (e.g. you cannot relax), it will be tough to fall asleep. This is because your brain becomes conditioned to the relaxation that you get from alcohol and it is unable to relax naturally after being chemically influenced for a period of time. So can alcohol cause insomnia? Absolutely, especially if you drink on a regular basis.
Additionally, as you build up a tolerance to alcohol, it produces a ton of biological changes within your body that push you to stay awake until you have your alcohol “fix.” Usually, this “fix” becomes a larger amount each time and it will be very tough to actually fall asleep if you don’t get enough to drink. Plus, when you finally do fall asleep (more like “pass out”) your quality of sleep will be significantly reduced.
Alcohol withdrawal insomnia
Alcohol insomnia can also be caused by withdrawals. If you are going to withdraw from this substance after drinking for awhile, it is best not to do it “cold turkey.” The side-effects of withdrawal can be very difficult to deal with if you do not have the help of a professional. People have reported hallucinations, black outs, memory problems, depression, and anxiety. Although alcohol is socially accepted, it is a poison – even when used in moderation, it is going to have a terrible impact on the quality of your life; especially your sleep.

A condition that is very common in people with anxiety disorder is “anxiety insomnia.” This is basically insomnia that is induced by anxiety disorders, nervousness, or related tension. The reason that your anxiety keeps you awake is because your brainwave pattern is unable to slow down to the alpha brainwave range from the beta brainwave range. Beta brainwaves are normal to have during the day, but at night, when it is time to go to bed, most people (without anxiety) are able to shift into the alpha range without even trying.
